How much does a website cost for a small business?
A small business website costs anywhere from about $200 a year on a DIY builder to $50,000 or more from an agency. The biggest variable is who does the work, not the software. Most local service businesses, the plumbers, law firms, realtors and med spas of Houston, land between $1,000 and $10,000 for a professional build.
Here is how the market breaks down by type of builder. These are national ranges from published pricing guides and Clutch's project data. Houston rates track close to the US average.
| Who builds it | Typical upfront cost | Typical timeline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace) | $17–$159/month on Wix; $19–$99/month on Squarespace (annual billing) | Days to a week of your own time | Brand-new businesses testing an idea |
| Freelancer | $500–$5,000 one-time; Thumbtack's national average is $1,057 | 2–6 weeks | Simple brochure sites with a clear brief |
| Small studio (like AtEase) | $3,000–$10,000+ | Days to 6 weeks | Local businesses that need leads, not just a page |
| Mid-size agency | $10,000–$50,000+ | 1–3+ months | Established companies with several decision-makers |
| Large or enterprise agency | $100,000–$500,000+ | Several months or more | Big catalogs, complex systems, many integrations |
The spread is wide because "a website" covers everything from a one-page template to a custom store wired into your inventory system. Clutch, which collects verified client reviews, reports an average web design project of about $38,105, but also says most projects on its platform cost less than $10,000. A few large builds pull the average up. The median small business pays far less.
WebFX surveyed 250 US marketers and found that most businesses spend $501 to $5,000 a year on web design. That is a useful sanity check: if your quote is ten times that for a five-page service site, ask what you are paying for.
How much does web design cost in Houston specifically?
Web design in Houston costs about the same as the national market: most local firms bill $100 to $149 an hour, and most projects fall under $10,000 or in the $10,000 to $49,999 band. Houston is not a cheap or expensive outlier. What changes the price is the firm's size and minimums.
Clutch's directory of Houston web designers shows the range. Several listed firms charge $100–$149 an hour. Minimum project sizes run from $1,000 at the small end to $10,000 or $25,000 at larger shops. Clutch's national guide puts typical US agency rates at the same $100–$149 an hour.
So a 40-hour build at a Houston agency rate is roughly $4,000 to $6,000 before content, photos or integrations. A 150-hour custom build is $15,000 or more. That math explains most of the quotes you will see.
What drives the cost of a website?
Six things move a website quote more than anything else: the number of unique page layouts, custom versus template design, who writes the copy, whether you sell online, how many outside systems it connects to, and how much SEO groundwork is included. Each one adds hours, and hours are the price.
- Pages and templates. Ten service pages that share one layout cost far less than ten pages that each need their own design. Count layouts, not pages.
- Custom design. A theme or template is cheap because the design work is done. Custom design means someone draws your site from scratch around your brand and your customer.
- Copywriting. If you hand over finished text, the build goes faster. If the designer writes it, budget for it. Leadpages puts content creation at $0 to $2,000 or more depending on how much you outsource.
- E-commerce. A store needs product pages, a cart, payments, tax and shipping rules. OuterBox prices e-commerce builds at $25,000 to $150,000 or more at agency rates.
- Integrations. Booking calendars, CRMs, listing feeds, payment links and AI lead response each need setup and testing.
- SEO setup. Page titles, schema markup, local landing pages, a Google Business Profile tie-in and a fast build. Done at launch, it is cheap. Bolted on later, it is a second project.
What does a website cost per month after launch?
After launch, a small business website usually costs $10 to $20 a year for the domain, $0 to $20 a month to host a static site (more on some platforms), and $50 to $200 a month if you pay someone to maintain it. SEO is the big optional line item, commonly $500 to $3,000 a month. A builder plan bundles hosting into its monthly fee.
| Ongoing cost | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | $10–$20/year | The .com wholesale price rises from $10.26 to $10.97 on November 1, 2026 |
| Hosting | $0–$20/month for a static site; $3–$300/month in general | Netlify's free plan is $0 and its Pro plan is $20/month |
| Builder subscription | $17–$159/month (Wix); $19–$99/month (Squarespace) | Includes hosting; you keep paying as long as the site is live |
| Maintenance | $50–$200/month for custom sites | Updates, backups, small edits |
| SEO | $501–$1,000/month is the most common retainer | Ahrefs found average retainers of $1,348 for freelancers and $3,209 for agencies |
Maintenance is where platform choice matters most. A WordPress site with a dozen plugins needs constant patching. Patchstack counted 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42% from the year before, and 91% of them were in plugins. A hand-coded static site has no plugins and no database to attack, so there is very little to patch.

Is Wix or Squarespace cheaper than a custom website?
Wix or Squarespace is cheaper in year one, and often more expensive by year three. A builder costs a few hundred dollars a year forever, plus your time. A custom site costs more upfront, then only hosting and optional care. The real question is whether the site needs to win customers or just exist.
| Wix / Squarespace | Custom static site | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $0 plus your time | One-time build fee |
| Monthly cost | $17–$159 (Wix) or $19–$99 (Squarespace), billed annually | $0–$20 hosting, or a care plan that includes hosting |
| Ownership | You rent the platform; the design does not move with you | You own the code and can host it anywhere |
| Speed | Good, but carries the platform's scripts on every page | Ships only what the page needs |
| Design | Templates, adjusted | Built around your business |
| Store fees | Squarespace Basic charges a 2% transaction fee on store sales | Only your payment processor's fee |
| Who does the work | You | The builder, then you edit content |
To be fair to the builders: if you are just starting, have more time than money, and mostly need a page that proves you exist, a builder is a fine call. Squarespace annual plans even include a year of free domain registration. Move to a custom site when the website has a job, like ranking for "roofer in Katy" or sending you leads at 9 p.m. on a Sunday.
What are the red flags in a website quote?
The biggest red flag is a quote where you do not own what you paid for. Watch for hosting you cannot leave, a domain registered in the agency's name, per-page upsells after the fact, and monthly fees with no clear list of what they cover. Any of these can cost more than the build itself.
- You don't own the site. Some firms "lease" a site for a monthly fee. Stop paying and the site disappears. Ask in writing who owns the code and design files.
- The domain is in their name. Your domain should be registered to you, with your login. Getting it back from a vendor who went quiet is a real headache.
- Locked hosting. Hosting that only works on the agency's server, at a markup, ties you to them. A static site can move hosts in an afternoon.
- Per-page upsells. A low base price that covers five pages, then charges for each new service or location page. Ask what a sixth page costs before you sign.
- Vague monthly fees. "Maintenance" should name what is included: updates, backups, edits, hours. If it doesn't, it is margin.
- No timeline. A small business site should not take six months. Ask for a date.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a website cost in Houston?
Most Houston small businesses pay $500 to $5,000 with a freelancer, $3,000 to $10,000 with a small studio, or $10,000 to $50,000 or more with a mid-size agency. Local agencies commonly bill $100 to $149 an hour. AtEase prices websites by industry: real estate agent sites start at $995 for a Starter site (plus a $99/month care plan, 12-month minimum) or $3,000 for a Custom site, and other businesses get a fixed quote after a short call.
What is a reasonable price for a small business website?
For a five to ten page site for a local service business, $1,000 to $10,000 is reasonable, depending on custom design, copywriting and integrations. WebFX's survey found most businesses spend $501 to $5,000 a year on web design.
How much does it cost to maintain a website each month?
Expect $10 to $20 a year for the domain, $0 to $20 a month to host a static site, and $50 to $200 a month for paid maintenance on a custom site. A static site on Netlify can host for free or $20 a month. AtEase care plans are $99 a month on real estate Starter sites and $150 a month on Custom sites, and include hosting.
Is it cheaper to use Wix or hire a web designer?
Wix is cheaper upfront, at about $17 to $159 a month on annual billing, but you pay it as long as the site is live and you do the work yourself. A designer costs more once, then only hosting. Over three or more years the gap narrows or flips.
How long does it take to build a small business website?
A freelancer or small studio usually takes 2 to 6 weeks. Agencies often take one to three months or longer. An AtEase Starter site can launch in a few days, and a Custom real estate site in about 1 to 2 weeks. Larger business sites take longer. With any builder, the biggest factor is how quickly you send content and feedback.
Should I own my website and domain?
Yes. Register the domain in your name with your own login, and get written confirmation that you own the code and design. If a vendor holds either one, leaving them gets expensive. AtEase clients own the code, domain and accounts.
Does the price include SEO?
It depends on the quote. Basic on-page SEO, such as titles, descriptions, schema and fast load times, should be part of any professional build. Ongoing SEO is a separate monthly service, most commonly $501 to $1,000 a month according to Ahrefs' survey of SEO providers.
Want a fixed price for your website?
